It will be recalled that due to the global pandemic which is having a second wave massively in some European states devastated many countries’ economies.
As part of measures to reduce the impact of this condition, government introduced what it termed “Social Relief of Distress” grant. The main purpose was to give all unemployed citizens an amount of R350 for six months period starting from May to October.
During the president speech in October outlining his economic recovery plan for the country, the president extended the special R350 grant for another three months up to January 2021.
Although some of the regular sassa grants also saw topups of R500 and R250 depending on the grant category. For instance, children support grant saw a R500 increase while the rest saw R250 upwards adjustment.
Meanwhile all the topups ended in October which many mothers who are receiving child support grants are virtually not happy.
They argue that since the grant amount they are receiving is for the kids, they too as unemployed should be given the opportunity to also apply for the R350.
The Black Sash Trust even sued government for not extending the Caregiver top ups. But a court dismissed the case.
