As described in the Bible, marriage is a divine institution that unite two families together comprising the man a(husband) and the woman (wife). Adam and Eve are the first couples put together by God himself. It was God who saw the need to provide Adam a wife to complement him in order for God’s purpose of filling the earth with their offspring (Genesis 2:22-24).

It was originally designed to be a permanent bond between the couples with only death and fornication as means of separation or divorce.  Marriage has to be enjoyed by both parties despite the fact tribulations can come in, but usually the rewards are enormous.

Commentary On The Above Bible Verses

  • Genesis: 2:22-24

Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

Clearly Adam was full of joy seeing his beautiful wife and the verse also helps to see why the need the two new couple have to live together and united as one family (flesh). This bible quotation helps us appreciate the beginning of marriage. Interestingly, marriage is found in every known culture since time immemorial.

This Bible verse help us to see the very beginning of the marriage. It is clear from the scripture that God actually made a good arrangement to put together Adam and Eve to be one flesh.

  • Proverbs 5:18-19

May your fountain be blessed,
and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
A loving doe, a graceful deer—
may her breasts satisfy you always,
may you ever be intoxicated with her love.
Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife?
Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?

This verse in the book of Proverbs helps us appreciate the sanctity of marriage and how we have to enjoy ourselves in the marriage. The writer makes it clear to be intoxicated in the love of your wife (or husband). We are not to envy other others wife (or husband). He described such woman as a wayward woman.

  • Proverbs 12: 4

A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown,
but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.

The main theme here is the character of the wife. Many husbands will admit that as a fact. Nobility is a sign of wisdom and every person would want to see his/her spouse to show a sign of wisdom or nobility. It brings much respect and dignity to the family.

Unlike the wife with the noble character, the wife with disgraceful character is proverbially described as decay in the bones. Just as decay bring pain and eventually breaks down the bones so as the such wife tears down the marriage or the family. The same thing also applies to the husband too.

  • Proverbs 18: 22

He who finds a wife finds what is good
and receives favor from the Lord.

Such a wonderful verse. It is usually quoted in marriage invitation cards or marriage ceremony cards. Other translations puts add an adjective “good” before the wife. Marrying a good wife brings favour from God.

A good wife builds her home and make sure God is the third strand in the marriage bond and God will indeed bless such a relationship.

  • Proverbs 19:14

Houses and wealth are inherited from parents,
but a prudent wife is from the Lord.

This is the wish of all husbands that God will give  them a prudent wife. May God give everyone reading this post. Houses and wealth are things that can be inherited from parents, but it takes a prudent wife to keep it and manages it well to the benefit of all.

  • Proverbs 20: 6-7

Many claim to have unfailing love,
but a faithful person who can find?

The righteous lead blameless lives;
blessed are their children after them.

Being faithful is the number one reason most marriage unions are still intact and still thriving. Many divorces are happening as a result of unfaithfulness. According to a report found on wikipedia, the lifelong probability of marriage ending in a divorce is 40% – 50% in the USA.

Proverbs 31:10

A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.

Wives are the makers and breakers of the house. They are more important in the marriage arrangement and their worth cannot just be compared with rubies. Rubies are considered as a precious gem. The whole verses of the book of Proverbs talks about this amazing woman.

Any woman who wants to get married can take her time to study and carefully examine those verses and by God’s grace, it will help her to keep and manage her marriage well. Likewise, any man who wants to get married, can use this as part of his criteria in the search of a real gem (wife).

  • Ephesians 5:22-23

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

Another arrangement for the marriage union. Submission and order of submission. Note that submissiveness does not allow the husband to lord over the wife but he should treat her with respect.[verse 25].

  • Deuteronomy 24:5

If a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any other duty laid on him. For one year he is to be free to stay at home and bring happiness to the wife he has married.

Wow, that sounds good from a loving father. Some kind of honeymoon. In case of war, man who has just married is exempted so that he can bring happiness to the just married wife. This is a period of enjoyment, it can also be inferred that, God wanted the marriage to have good foundation and build intimacy.

  • Matthew 19:4-6

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

This answer from Jesus was a reply to questions posed by the Pharisees who wanted to tempt him. They asked if it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife based on any reason. Jesus answer clearly draws the point that originally, God did not have any intention for divorce. This should help couples to do everything within their means to maintain the marriage. The effects of divorce can be very damning.

  • 1 Corinthians 7:1-16

It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” (verse 1),

each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband (verse 2)

Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do.  But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion. (verse 8&9)

This Chapter of the 1Corithians answers many questions about the Christian marriage. The Apostle Paul advocates on the freedom Christians believers have to choose to marry or not marry. If one chooses to marry, he/she must bear in mind certain responsibilities that comes along with the marriage. However, if one chooses not marry, he has done no wrong.

  • Colosians 3 : 18-19

Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.

Just as Ephesians 5:22-23 also asks wives to be submissive to their husbands and the husbands are also urged to love their wives and to be harsh or abuse them.

  • Hebrews 13: 4

Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.

Christians are show deep respect to the bond witnessed by God. It should be honored and kept pure. It should devoid of adultery because judgement awaits those that do not accord the respect due the marriage bond.

  • Mark 10:11-12

He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”

Much needed not to be talked about this. It is obvious God did not want any divorce among his worshipers. Some men would just divorce their partners on mere allegations or trivial issues. As said in the beginning, God wants the marriage to be lifelong union that can only be separated by death. (1 Corinthians 7:39)
