Jolidee Matongo is a politician in South Africa. He was born in 1974 or 1975 in Soweto, in the Transvaal province. He was elected as mayor of Johannesburg on August 10, 2021, and has served in that capacity ever since.
Before being elected to his current position as mayor, he was already involved in the political process in South Africa. He was on the municipal management committee (MMC) overseeing the City’s finances. Jolidee was a subordinate of the late Geoff Makhubo.
Jolidee is a member of the African National Congress, which is the nation’s dominant political party (ANC).

He has been a member of the REC of the ANC in Johannesburg for more than eighteen years at this point. Matongo was a member of the ANC’s Regional Executive Committee and served as the committee’s spokesman. In August of 2021, Matongo won the election for the executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg with no opposition. After Makhubo passed away in July from complications related to Covid-19, he was given the chain of office.

In 2016, he won a seat on the council and became one of its members. Jolidee Matongo won the election for mayor of the City of Johannesburg on August 10, 2021. Before retiring from that position in 2019, he had been a member of the City’s mayoral committee for finance. Since the local government elections in 2016, he became the City’s third mayor. Before that, the City was led by former DA member Herman Mashaba and then by Geoff Makhubo. However, Geoff Makhubo died in July 2021 due to complications related to Covid-19 at 53. He was the third mayor of the City.
To install Matongo, the African National Congress (ANC), which has 124 members in the council, needed an extra 12 votes from other parties.
