Confirmed: How To Apply For SASSA Unemployment Grant of R350

Over the past few days after the president announced the unemployment grant of R350 for the unemployed people as part of government measures to mitigate the impact of the global pandemic, there have several speculations especially on social media as to what is the correct procedure for the application.

Today, the sector minister of the Social Development, Mad. Zulu has confirmed the approved procedure and platform people can confidently apply for the grant.

In her speech, the following is what she said:

Let me hasten to add that as we implement this special grant, we will remain vigilant and not tolerate any form of fraud and corruption we have thus built-in strong cyber security and strong monitoring mechanisms in this regard. All instances of suspected fraud or corruption will be investigated thoroughly with appropriate action taken where such conduct is found.

Allow me to outline the criteria again;

The amount to be paid to qualifying applications will be R350 per month from May – October 2020. The Special COVID19 Social Relief of Distress Grant will be implemented in terms of the existing avenue provided for by the SRD channel, which is administered in accordance with the provisions as set in the Social Assistance Act, 2004. 

The qualifying criteria for the special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress of R350 per month for distressed individuals is as follows:

The grant will be available to South African Citizen, Permanent Resident or Refugee registered on the Home Affairs system; who are resident within the borders of the Republic of South Africa;

Applicants must be:

above the age of 18;
Unemployed;
Not receiving any income;
Not receiving any social grant;
Not receiving any unemployment insurance benefit and does not qualify to receive unemployment insurance benefits;
Not receiving a stipend from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme; and
Not resident in a government- funded or subsidized institution.

Prospective Applicants will need to provide the following compulsory information for processing of their applications:

Identity Number/Department of Home permit;
Name and Surname as captured in the ID (and initials);
Gender and Disability;
Banking details – Bank Name and Account Number;
Contact details – Cell phone number;
Proof of Residential Address;

The manner in which qualifying citizens can apply for this grant will be as follows:

The new WHATSAPP line will be 082 0468 553
The USSD or SMS Line will be *134*7737#
The email address will be srd@sassa.gov.za

We are mindful that we may have some challenges as we roll out this grant and we appeal to members of the public to exercise patience as we embark upon this journey.

HOW TO APPLY

  • WhatsApp: Just Save the number and Send Hi or Hello to the given number and follow the screen prompts as and when it is asked. Remember this is an automated system, so no one will be there to tell you.
  • USSD: This can be used on any phone not only a smartphone. Just dial the code and follow the screen prompts. Before you do that make sure you have all the required pieces of information at hand.
  • Email: With email, You to compose the message and use “Application for SRD R350” or something similarar as your “Message Title/Subject” and enter your details in the message body. if you need attach any file, click on “attach files” button and go to the destination folder and open it. After everything is called just forward/send it the given email address. They will you send you an e-form (electronic form) fill all the necessary details and forward it to the same email address: srd@sassa.gov.za
  • In all of these, SASSA will reply you if your application was successful.
  • Visit: srd.sassa.gov.za

In case you don’t have bank accounts, you can still apply without the bank details. Later, they will request from you where you can receive the money.

Once again if you do not have proof of residence, you can provide your residential address.

  1. I applied for my daughter Sesethu Khwaza. ID number 0203080380082 she didn’t got any money her application was approved also sent the bank details but still nothing. Can you please assist

  2. I applied for my brother Moses Scello Mbedu ,his ID no is 7410145769083 .He didn’t got any money ,his application was approved, an he get the massage of to fill the bank details ,but it fail .
